FollowRecording Your Own Messages: Getting The Right Equipment
This article we give you some tips and tricks about obtaining some good (but affordable) recording equipment so you or your staff can record and prepare the highest quality audio files for your messages with 1-800 Notify.
NOTE: Once you get the correct setup, you can use our Recording and Editing tips article here:
First, the equipment. You will need a a few items:

(1) A computer
A computer (Windows, Mac or Linux) with an open USB receptacle (to plug in the USB mic).
(2) A good quality USB Mic.
(Most often the built-in microphones in your computer or other device just aren't as good as an external USB mic.)
We recommend a SAMSON C01U or similar.
You can buy the SAMSON mic many places, but here is a link to the mic on Amazon.com:

SEARCH FOR: USB microphone
Current pricing was about $80.00 on amazon.com in Sept 2013, but prices will vary.
(3) A shock mount to hold the mic.
Current pricing was about $25.00 on amazon.com in Sept 2013, but prices will vary.

(4) A pop filter for the mic
The pop filter is a little screen to put in front of the mic to prevent you from "popping your p's"
SEARCH FOR:** pop filter for microphone**
(5) Stand for the mic.
Some sort of stand to hold the mic, shock mount, and pop filter. (Usually less than $20)
You can get a free standing stand, one that sits on your desk or one that clamps on the side of your desk that can swivel so that it is just in front of your mouth while you are sitting in front of your computer. (We like the desk arm-clamp model, as it seems to be the most flexible).
SEARCH FOR: mic stand (Prices range from about $15 for desk top, to $60+ for swivel arm or floor mount)
(6) Software for recording and editing your messages.
While you can buy sound recording and editing software, we have found good luck with the free software called Audacity.
You can download Audacity for free from this link:

Now that you have all the right equipment, you are ready to start recording and editing your messages.
